Sacramento, CA - 亞太裔公共事務聯盟（APAPA）將於2016年1月27日(星期三)上午11:00點在斯坦福大學的斯坦福大學教師俱樂部（Stanford Faculty Club)舉行新聞發佈會，涉及關於近期尤其在科技工程領域裏發生的針對華裔專業人士的種族偏見和冤假錯案。本次會議將專門討論陳霞芬事件。陳霞芬（Sherry Chen）是美國聯邦政府雇員，她因被懷疑涉及四項經濟間諜罪而被逮捕和停職，隨後又被毫無解釋地緊急釋放和結案。這個事件導致她的信譽和財務狀況受到巨大衝擊。本次活動只對媒體開放。請注意不可以在任何報刊文章引用“斯坦福大學教師俱樂部(Stanford Faculty Club)“這個名稱。任何媒體在這樣做之前必須獲得美國斯坦福大學的批准。

最近，在美華人科學家，技術專業人員，學術研究人員，以及聯邦政府雇員已日益成為與危害國家安全、知識產權盜竊及企業間諜活動相關的刑事調查和起訴的重點。隨著多起被高調宣傳的所謂間諜和商業秘密交換案件的發生，我們不得不質疑其中的種族偏見歧視和對華裔美國人公民權利及憲法權利的侵犯。

APAPA支持陳霞芬，一個曾任職於美國俄亥俄州國家氣象局的美國公民。她被誣告為中國政府從事間諜活動，她的生活也因此遭受極大的傷害。儘管陳霞芬被指控四項重罪，面臨25年徒刑，100萬美元的罰款，名譽也被汙損，但聯邦調查局(FBI)卻沒有發現任何可以起訴她為間諜的證據。在沒有任何解釋或道歉的情況下，所有指控被緊急撤銷。她目前面臨被終止工作和需支付超過20萬美元的律師費。

1月28日的研討會將由APAPA全國事務委員會主席Albert Wang的介紹開始，隨後百人會成員George Koo博士和Brian Sun律師將作相關報告和評論（Brian Sun曾是另一個種族偏見受害人李文和博士的辯護律師）。他們將討論複雜的美國法律環境，歷史淵源，相關地緣政治背景，以及在此背景下發生的美國政府針對華裔美國科學家和聯邦政府雇員的有影響的類似訴訟案件。陳霞芬女士也將出席並講訴她作為種族偏見受害者的經歷，並針對如何避免類似困境提出建議。

Sacramento, CA – The Asian Pacific American Public Affairs Association (APAPA) will host a press conference on Wednesday, January 27, 2015, 11:00 AM at Stanford University – Stanford Faculty Club to address the issue of recent racial profiling and false imprisonment of Asian American professionals particularly in the STEM fields. This conference specifically will highlight the case of U.S. federal employee, Sherry Chen, who was suspended based on suspicions of 4 counts of economic espionage that were subsequently dropped without explanation. Her reputation and finances suffered tremendously as the result. This event is open to media only. Please note that “Stanford Faculty Club” cannot be referenced in any press articles. Press must acquire approval from Stanford University before doing so.

Recently, Chinese American scientists, technology professionals, academic researchers, and federal government employees in the United States have increasingly become the focus of criminal investigations and prosecutions involving national security, intellectual property theft, and corporate espionage. With various high profile cases of alleged espionage and exchange of trade secrets, concerns have risen for racial discrimination and violations of civil and constitutional rights of U.S. citizens of Asian descent. APAPA offers support to Sherry Chen, a US Citizen and employee of the National Weather Service office in Ohio, whose life was turned upside down upon false accusation of spying for the Chinese government. Despite the very serious charges of four felonies, 25 years in prison, $1 million in fines, and a tarnished reputation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) found no evidence of espionage to prosecute her. The charges were dropped abruptly without explanation or apology from the U.S. government. She currently risks termination from her job and over $200,000 in legal fees.

The public is invited to two upcoming events: a seminar in collaboration with the Committee of 100 (C-100) on the Legal Risks in Advancing Technology between the U.S. and China on Thursday, January 28th at Sheraton Palo Alto ( Sequoia - Oak room ), 625 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, CA 94301, and a fundraiser in Cupertino on Saturday, January 30th hosted by APAPA to support Sherry Chen’s legal defense costs. 

The seminar program on January 28th will begin with an introduction from APAPA National Issues Committee Chair, Albert Wang, followed by a presentation and comments from C-100 members Dr. George Koo and former defense lawyer for another racial profiling victim Dr. Wen Ho Lee, Brian Sun, to discuss the complex U.S. legal environment, historical context, and geo-political background surrounding similar notable cases that have been brought by the U.S. government against Chinese American scientists and federal employees. Ms. Chen will also be present to share her experience as a victim of racial profiling and how to avoid such predicament.
